How do you tell someone who helped build your agency that you've outgrown each other? Drew McLellan and I talked about this on our latest episode of the Agency Profit Podcast. “What got you here won’t get you where you’re going next.” Nowhere is that more painful than with people. When you're small, you need generalists—the unicorn who can manage projects, jump into creative, and handle client calls. That person is invaluable in a five-person agency. At 15 or 20, you need specialists. A-players at one or two things, not B-players in everything. The generalist who carried you through the early years is still there. They've been loyal, stuck with you through hard times. But the business needs something different now. If you're like me, you already know this can be one of the hardest decisions agency owners face—and they usually wait way too long. (I know I'm guilty of it.)
