Your title doesn't earn you trust. Your actions do. I've been reflecting on what actually builds trust in leadership, and it's rarely what we think. Trust isn't automatic. It's earned through a simple equation: Trust = (Credibility + Reliability + Intimacy) ÷ Self-Orientation Let’s break this down from the owner's seat. 1/ Credibility This is not your resume. It’s whether people believe you understand what’s happening right now. → Why priorities changed. → Why a decision was made. → Can you explain why margins moved? When owners dodge this, teams fill in the gaps. Buyers do too. Credibility grows when your answers match reality, not optics. 2/ Reliability This is where trust quietly leaks. → You say you will follow up and don’t. → You say next quarter and it slips again. → You say one thing, then change course without closing the loop. No big blowups. Just erosion. Reliable leaders reduce noise because people stop guessing. 3/ Intimacy This is the safety to speak early. → Can someone bring you bad news without bracing. → Can they say something is off before it becomes expensive. Most owners think they want transparency. But they punish it without realizing. When people wait to tell you the truth, trust is already gone. 4/ Self-Orientation This is the divider for a reason. When every decision feels like it protects you first, → Trust drops fast. → Credit flows up. → Risk flows down. Teams notice. So do buyers. Low self-orientation is visible when decisions still make sense even when you are not in the room. Here’s the part that matters. Trust is not soft. It is operational. It shows up in how fast issues surface. In how much control lives outside your head. In whether the business holds when you step back. Titles give authority. Trust creates value.
