Layoffs don’t have to be handled poorly. But too often they are. Posting this in hopes it helps even one company, or one person navigate it better. 👇 1/ If you’re an employer: ▪️Do it like a human. That means real severance (as much as you can reasonably afford), even if it impacts leadership bonuses. Take the hit at the top. ▪️Be direct about the “why.” No corporate fluff. People already know the market is tough. Say it plainly: things didn’t go as planned. ▪️Communicate with empathy, not PR spin. The companies that stand out aren’t perfect, they’re honest, clear, and people-first in how they show up. ▪️Actually help people land on their feet. Not just “we’ll support you.” Real support = intros, visibility, tracking progress, and follow-through. When we went through this, we made it a weekly leadership priority, and it mattered. ▪️Rethink the “Open to Work” bias. Some of the best talent out there is raising their hand right now. I’ve personally seen someone with that label come in and immediately raise the bar. 2/ If you’ve been impacted: ▪️This market is tough. It’s not a reflection of your worth. ▪️Your job ≠ your identity. Never has. Never will. ▪️If you’re struggling more than you expected, reach out. To anyone. Seriously. You don’t have to go through it alone. ▪️This is also a reset moment. A chance to ask: What do I actually want next? Not just “what’s available.” I’ve seen firsthand how a layoff can completely redirect someone’s path, for the better. Someone close to me got laid off after being a top performer. It made no sense at the time. That moment pushed them to try something new. That led to new skills. New roles. New opportunities. Eventually, it led us to building something together. Looking back, that “setback” was actually the starting point. If you’re hiring: take a chance on someone impacted. If you’ve been impacted: this is not the end of your story.
